* means probably resprayed, read more in following part Camouflages down in this page.

Antennas setup: (1:32 kits from Kittyhawk - A - 32004, D - 32003)

1 - left and right boom - top - AN/ARC-54 VHF-FM (32003 - 2 x Part H33 + antenna whip from wire, 32004 - 2 x Part H33 + antenna whip from wire)
2 - under the cocpit - "towel rack" VHF FM homing antenna (not used anymore) (32003 - Part F35, 32004 - Part F35)
3 - right boom - bottom - AN/USQ-42 FM monitor (32003 - Part F26, 32004 - Part F26)
4 - right boom - bottom - small blade antenna behind Part F26 - IFF-SIF AN/APX-100(V) (already moulded on the kit - 32003, 32004)
5 - small blade antennas on top of left and right vertical stabilisator - left - AN/ARN-118(V) TACAN, right - AN/APX-100(V) IFF (already moulded on the kit - 32003, 32004)
6 - left boom - bottom - aft - AN/ARC-51AX UHF-AM COMM (32003 - Part A15, 32004 - Part A15)
7 - left boom - bottom - behind wheel well - ?? need type confirmation ?? (32003 - Part I36, 32004 - Part I36)
8 - wire antenna fuselage to tail - HF antenna AN/ARC-199 Photo 1
9 - left and right boom - top - blade antennas - VHF/UHF (left boom Radio 2, right boom Radio 3) (32003 - 2 x Part I23)
10 - left boom - bottom - aft - VHF/UHF Radio 1 (32003 - Part I24)
11 - left and right vertical tail - AN/APR-39 RWR spiral antenna (32003 - Part GP8, Part GP9, 32004 - Part GP8, Part GP9)
12 - left and right nose - AN/APR-39 RWR spiral antenna (32004 - Part A16, Part A17, 32003 - already moulded on the kit on Part A1 and A7)
13 - under the cocpit - centerline - behind the front wheel well - thick "hockey stick" type antenna - ?? need type confirmation ??
14 - under the cocpit - R - right, L - left - thin "hockey stick" type antenna - LORAN-C
15 - under the cocpit - right side nearly centerline (side position as the first front fold-out step) behind the front wheel well - AN/APR-39 RWR blade antenna
NOTE: This antenna was part of the AN/APR-39 system consisted of 4 x spiral and 1 x blade antenna. Per the diagram form NAVAIR manual, they were all part of one system. So it looks like ALL planes in Gulf had them. You can see them only on few pictures, but we can assume that all planes had this small blade antenna installed.
16 - left and right vertical tail, left and right wingtip, leading edge - AN/AAR-54 Missile Aproach Warning System - those aircraft are easy to spot as new antennas were installed on leading edge of wing tips and extra two blisters added to the tail, in front of AN/APR-39 antennas
NOTE: This system should be post-Gulf war, but it looks like it started just before the Gulf war and atleast one airframe was already modified (NOTE: the antennas/recievers were not installed, only blanking plates)
17 - covers for the early RWR antennas - the antennas were removed and there are patches to cover the holes Photo 1

Camouflages for Gulf war OV-10A/D/D+:

On OV-10D/D+s the FLIR balls were either in FS 34095 Field Green or in FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey, check available pictures.
The oversprayed planes had probably not the black wingwalk markings sprayed on again and they probably had only limited number of additional warning markings etc. sprayed on again.

Initially before repaint, Broncos were in so called "Land warfare" camouflage consisting of FS 34095 Field Green, FS 35237 Dark Blue Grey and FS 37038 Matt Black on all surfaces.
VMO-1 - Pictures shows that planes in Land warfare camouflage were either resprayed in FS 30219 Light Earth and FS 30279 Matt Tan on upper surfaces and FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey on lower surfaces (BuNo. 155486 only ?) OR had their FS 34095 Field Green and FS 37038 Matt Black parts oversprayed with FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey (rest of VMO-1 airframes, except ? - follow the text). Even the letters/numbers on tail were partially oversprayed with FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey. The only BuNo. 155481 was PROBABLY in overall FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey, with top of the booms, fuselage and stencilling in FS 35237 Dark Blue Grey (pics are inconclusive).
VMO-2 - All but two Ds - 155395 and 155466, and the replacement A - 155435, were resprayed with FS 30219 Light Earth and FS 30279 Matt Tan on upper surfaces and FS 36375 Light Compass Ghost Grey on lower surfaces between 15-26th August 1990. Both Ds were repainted in theater after they were unloaded from USS Iwo Jima, together with the replacement A which flew from the MCAS New River to the Gulf in original Land warfare camouflage.
NOTE: The new Warpaint book shows the sand/brown/grey camouflage colors as FS 30140 Brown Special, FS 20400 Tan Special and FS 35526 Light Sky Blue

So, it is 99% safe to say, that Broncos were not flying operationally in their Land warfare camouflage, which I think was too "dark" for the region and posed big risk.

BUT

When I was comparing available pictures and comparing it with timeframe, I found some interestning thing.

BuNo. 155474 - the available pics are for VMO-2 plane coded UU-12, carrying sand/brown fuel tank, which is after the Gulf war. According to Warpaint book, there is no known MODEX during Gulf war. There are no pics to prove it yet.
BuNo. 155483 - the available pics are for probably VMO-1 plane with no MODEX on a flightline probably in Gulf war with one other grey and one other sand/brown airframes, VMO-2 plane coded UU-754 from 08/06/1991, VMO-2 plane coded UU-14 from 03/11/1993. According to Warpaint book, this airframe should carry ER-06 MODEX during Gulf war. There are no pics to prove it yet.
BuNo. 155486 - the available pics are for VMO-1 plane with ER-05 onboard aircraft carrier, and from VMO-4 with MODEX 510 from 01/04/1992. According to Warpaint book, this airframe should carry ER-05 MODEX during Gulf war.
BuNo. 155489 - the available pics are for VMO-2 plane coded UU-10 together with 155474/UU-12, carrying sand/brown fuel tank, which is after the Gulf war, VMO-2 plane coded UU-755 from 21/07/1991. According to Warpaint book, this airframe should carry ER-07 MODEX during Gulf war. There are no pics to prove it yet.

All airframes above, in all those pics, STILL carried the Land warfare scheme. So, there is a possibility that these airframes was not repainted at all and flew in that Land warfare scheme during Gulf war. There is no sense to go "Land warfare - Grey/Grey - Land warfare" camo change. More research needed ...

Transportation of Broncos to the Gulf:

VMO-1 - Just after Christmas 1990, 155424, 155434 and 155435 were craned on to the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 and 155489 on to the USS America CV-66. (155481, 155499, 155486, 155447, 155409, 155474 and 155479 were also on those ships, but no idea on which so far). On 28/12/1990 both ships set sail heading to Persian Gulf. On 09/01/1991 as the carriers neared Spain, the squadron flew its aircraft off the decsks to NAS Rota, Spain. On 11/01/1991, they continued "Trans-Med" with three Broncos assigned to each Hercules with fuel stops Palma de Mallorca, Spain - NAS Sigonella, Sicily, Italy - NAS Souda Bay, Crete - Cairo, Egypt - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) before arriving to King Abdul Aziz AB, Saudi Arabia on 17/01/1991. The ships arrived to Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia on 16/01/1991.
155395 and 155466 were craned on to USS Iwo Jima LPH-2 during 10/1990 in State Port Authority in Morehead City, North Carolina, and sailed to port of Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia were they were craned off and transferred to VMO-2 on 16/01/1991.

VMO-2 - All repainted airframes took the long way to the Gulf. They started on 28/08/1990 and flew the route MCAS Camp Pendleton, CA - MCAS El Toro, CA - Tinker AFB, OK - MCAS Cherry Point, NC. At MCAS Cherry Point, 155465 went unservicable. The unit took 155435 from VMO-1 (not repainted) instead. They continued to trip via Pease AFB, NY - Goose Bay, Canada, - Frobisher Aiport, Iqaluit, Canada - Soderstrum, Greenland - Keflavik, Iceland - RAF Lossiemouth, UK - RAF Lakenheath, UK - Zaragoza, Spain - NAS Sigonella, Sicily, Italy - NAS Souda Bay, Crete - Cairo, Egypt - Qassim International Airport, Saudi Arabia for a brief fuel stop and finally deploying to King Abdul Aziz AB, Saudi Arabia, finally arriving on 28/09/1990. When 155435, 155395 and 155466 arrived to the unit, they were resprayed as the rest of the planes.

Transportation of Broncos from the Gulf:

VMO-1 - No information yet.

VMO-2 - All 7 Broncos - 155428, 155454, 155395, 155466, 155468, 155473 and 155494 - were craned to USS Juneau (LPD-10) at Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia on 07/04/1991 and craned off at San Diego, CA, on 02/07/1991.

Decals:

There are decals for 4 planes for Gulf war:
OV-10D+ BuNo. 155473/UU-22 - nearly all OK. There should be no frame around the "PROPELLER" warning. No idea (no picture to prove it) if the plane carried the "walkway" on the top of the wing - Decal 23. The plane has correctly the right prop spinner in black color. Also, it is possible to have them both in sand color.
OV-10D+ BuNo. 155489/ER-05 - still in Land warfare, pictures shows this plane taking off of USS Theodore Roosevelt. It was probably NOT resprayed in Gulf, see section "Camouflages and markings"
OV-10D+ BuNo. 155494/UU-20 - nearly all OK. There should be no frame around the "PROPELLER" warning. No idea (no picture to prove it) if the plane carried the "walkway" on the top of the wing - Decal 23.
OV-10D+ BuNo. 155499/ER-02 - nearly all OK. "MARINES" a "ER" were partially resprayed, check Photo 1 or instructions for ICM 48301 kit

Scale Aircraft Conversions - 48228 Landing gear legs and wheels (metal) (Italeri/Testors)

Both Testors/Italeri kits are terrible, Testors/Italeri kits are original Hawk from 1960s. Kit has raised lines, no details and wrong width of wing and horizontal tail (from prototype). But you can build a nice kit from it, albeit with a lot of effort, see OV-10D+ build HERE.

Hopefuly the ICM released both A and D+ versions in 2021, so we focus on how to build them correctly from the new kits.

NOTE: ICM released combo kit containing Gulf war OV-10A + OV-10D+. Kit number is 48302.
It looks like, that this release is fixing nearly all the error and adds some parts to already released kits 48300 (OV-10A) and 48301 (OV-10D+).
So far, it looks like the kit number 48302 is the most correct representation of Gulf war Broncos in any scale !!!

It was resprayed in Gulf, so this option is pre-war.
155494/UU-01 - NOT in Gulf in this marking, do not use it
OV-10D+ BuNo. 155499/ER-02 - all OK.

Version D/D+:

Kittyhawk 32003

How to build Gulf war OV-10A from Kittyhawk 32004 kit:

There are some errors in the instructions and also some additions:

- Step 5 - AN/ALQ-144 IR jammer - do not use Part F21, use instead Part F20 (mount) and build the jammer itself from Part F28 (side), F29 (side) and F36 (top)
- Step 9 - Part F35 - "towel rack" VHF FM homing antenna - the antenna in the kit is round in diameter, it should be nearly flat
- Step 10 - do not use Part A21 - antenna behind cocpit - not used in Gulf
- Step 14 - do not user Part F40, replace it with Part F39
- Step 21 - do not user Part F42, replace it with Part F41
- Step 22 - not shown another Part H33 antenna on the top of the boom - wrongly shown in Step 23 - glue it to the top of the boom same as in Step 15
- kit has wrong version of underwing pylons (from OV-10D/D+), so look at the pictures and scratchbuild them
- do not use underwing fuel tanks, OV-10A is not capable to carry them
- not shown in the instuctions - tail mounted AN/APR-39 RWR antennas - drill holes in Part F25 and G34 (vertical tails) and install Part GP8 and GP9 with the flat side with round "knob" side facing rearward
- if not specified otherwise, all interior structures are in Zinc Chromate Primer, so Step 3 - Part F22, Step 5 - Part A32 + A34 - paint it with Zinc Chromate Primer FS 33481
- wheel wells are not Grey FS 36622, but Gloss White FS 17875
- gear legs are not Grey FS 36622, but Gloss White FS 17875
- gear bay doors has inside color of Gloss White FS 17875
- gear bay doors has no edges in Gloss Red
- Part GP10, Part GP11, Part GP12, Part GP13, Part GP14, Part GP15, Part GP16, Part GP17 - formation lights - orange
- Part GP24 - left wingtip position light - clear red
- Part GP25 - right wingtip position light - clear green
- Part GP26 - lower anti-collision light - clear red
- Part GP27 - upper anti-collision light - clear red
- left vertical tail - tip - position light - white light
- the kit is missing handhold, on the right wing, between engine and fuselage
- the kit is missing the fold out step, last left one (check pictures)

Decals:

There are no correct decals for Gulf war Broncos so far.
I suggest you pick a specific airframe, choose the camouflage and make masks for letters/numbers and spray it.
Remember, that the letters/numbers are NOT black on sand/brown/grey camouflage, as shown on nearly every kit. They are either sand or tan, depending on camouflage color beneath them.

How to build Gulf war OV-10D BuNo. 155395 or BuNo.155466 from Kittyhawk 32003 kit:

Those airframes were unique, they were still D (not D+ alias SLEP) and still had the "old" antenna setup as version A
They had different cocpit configuration than it is in the kit
They could not carry AIM-9L/M missiles ?? confirmation ??

There are some errors in the instructions and also some additions:

- Step 9 - Part F35 - "towel rack" VHF FM homing antenna - the antenna in the kit is round in diameter, it should be nearly flat
- Step 10 - do not use Part A21 - antenna behind cocpit - not used in Gulf
- Step 15 - do not use Part I23, replace it with H33 + antenna whip from wire
- Step 22 - do not use Part I23, replace it with H33 + antenna whip from wire
- download instructions for OV-10A HERE and install the old antennas according to these instructions - Parts I36, A15, F26
- you need to replace the tape engine readouts on Part A2 and replace it with round dials (right side on Part A2)
- there were two types of fins for underwing tanks - one with 90 degree edges to the ground and one with slanted - check your pics
- this airframe was not able to carry AIM-9L/M missiles, so do not use Parts: G51, G52, G53, G54, H1, H2, H3, H4, H10, H15, H12, H41, H42, I21, I40, I42 - LAU-7/A-6 rail, pylon adapter and AIM-9 missile
